Key Change: Passport Validity Requirement Reduced for Visa Amnesty Applicants

The UAE government has made it easier for those with soon-to-expire passports to take advantage of the ongoing visa amnesty program. Residency law violators in the UAE only need their passports valid for at least one month, down from the previous six-month requirement, to apply for regularization or exit without incurring fines.

More than 19,700 Residency Violators Regularized in Dubai

Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) announced on September 24 that 19,772 residency law violators have adjusted their status through the Amer service centers since the beginning of the visa amnesty period on September 1, 2024. The amnesty allows violators to either regularize their status or leave the UAE without facing penalties.

Exit Permits Issued

In addition to regularization, the authorities have issued 7,401 exit permits to violators, allowing them to leave the UAE without legal repercussions. The permits were issued across 86 Amer branches spread throughout the emirate of Dubai, assisting those who opted to leave the country during the grace period.

New Passport Validity Requirement

The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) made an important announcement on Tuesday, reducing the minimum passport validity period required for violators to apply for residency status adjustment or exit. The reduction from six months to just one month aims to streamline the process and make it easier for individuals to regularize their status, even if their passport is close to expiration.

Easier Application Process

This change is expected to benefit many people whose passports are about to expire. They can now apply for either a residency visa or an exit permit during the amnesty period without needing to renew their passports first. By easing this requirement, the UAE authorities hope to encourage more individuals to come forward and resolve their residency issues before the grace period ends.

The UAE’s visa amnesty offers a significant opportunity for those who have overstayed their visas or violated residency laws to rectify their situation without financial penalties, ensuring a smoother transition for violators looking to remain or exit the country legally.
